Just in time for the winter season, renovation works on the Schilthorn summit have finished. The iconic James Bond filming location Piz Gloria shines in new splendour and technically up to date.
After 18 months of renovations, which had cost nine million Swiss Francs, the new look of Piz Gloria captivates with charme and modern facilities. Not just in time for the winter season but also for its 50th anniversary which the legendary James Bond location will be celebrating next year.
Built in 1967, two years before “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was filmed on the mountain, the heritage-protected Schilthorn was in desperate need for some technical upgrades as well as a make-over. Bond fans don’t despair, much of the original look has been kept so there are still a couple of things you will recognize from the film like the banisters and the golden lamps.

A total of 52 companies, many of them from the region, were involved in the conversion process. In November, the artisans sometimes stayed on the summit, just like the Bondgirls had done in 1969. “The logistical challenges were huge, also for our team,” says Christoph Egger, CEO of the Schilthorn Cableway.
The combination of simple wood design in the 360° restaurant section as well as sophisticated lighting and Bond glamour at the new bar is fitting. The energy and technology optimizations are impressive. In addition there is a lift connecting all levels of the building.

Another new feature on the outside of the structure is a 300 square meter 007 banner that encases the outer heliport facade – an unmistakeable reminder that Schilthorn is forever linked with the history of the James Bond franchise.

On the terrace, visitors will find the new “Skyline Shot” – a fixed Gunbarrel photo point where you can have your photo taken in true Bond style with nothing less than the stunning alps as a backdrop.
Also renewed are the restrooms – now complete with James Bond film clips displayed in the mirrors. What an unusual but cool idea.

The winter season opening and the reconstruction of the newly designed Piz Gloria summit restaurant was celebrated on 09 December with guests and building managers, the board of directors and management.
